In cooperation with the municipality of Lienz, the Institute for Geography and Regional Research of the University of Vienna conducted a comprehensive neighborhood analysis in Lienz. The results were now presented to the Committee for Economy and Location Development.
In close collaboration with the city marketing of Lienz, the Institute for Geography and Regional Research of the University of Vienna analyzed the downtown districts of Lienz for a semester as part of a regular course. This refers to the commercial streets of the downtown area, which differ from other areas by certain common characteristics, such as their historical development, use, architecture, social composition, or function in the urban structure.
The analysis was carried out as part of the "Project Seminar in Applied Geography, Spatial Research, and Spatial Planning". The course was led by Martin Heintel and Dominik Ebenstreit. In total, eleven students worked on this project, examining the city districts from a scientific perspective during the course.
The existing range of downtown businesses and existing vacancies were examined, among other things. In addition, the students developed suggestions and proposals – for example, for greening, shading, additional seating options, and consumption-free recreational areas. These and many other aspects were categorized and evaluated in the categories of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.
The insights gained from this were presented on Thursday, July 9, as part of the 12th Economic and Location Talks to the members of the committee of the same name of the city, as well as invited guests from business and politics.
The aim of the analysis is to strengthen the visibility of the individual districts and to incorporate the insights gained into concrete initiatives that will maintain and possibly further enhance the attractiveness of the city.
