New Iselsteg officially opened in Lienz

After several months of construction, the new Iselsteg was officially opened today, Tuesday, April 28, for pedestrians and cyclists. This allows everyone to use the popular connection from the north of the city to the city center again.

The new Iselsteg in Lienz was officially opened today, Tuesday, April 28, 2026. As part of the celebrations, in addition to Mayor Elisabeth Blanik and the head of the Lienz building district office, Johannes Nemmert, the faction leaders of the parties represented in the municipal council were also present.

Since November 10, 2025, the popular crossing over the Isel was closed. On November 12, as part of flood protection work, the old bridge supported by pillars was demolished. On January 27, 2026, the new superstructure was lifted with a 300-ton mobile crane - an impressive structure made of galvanized steel with a length of 41.66 meters, a width of 2.77 meters, and a height of one meter.

"However, this was only the freestanding structure, without concrete", explains Johannes Nemmert, head of the Lienz building district office. Subsequently, the 15 cm thick concrete superstructure was applied, and the bridge was completed on both sides with 1.20 meter high railings. The entire structure weighs around 125 tons, with 80 tons accounted for by the steel construction alone.

Mayor Elisabeth Blanik was visibly delighted at the opening: "We have painfully experienced how important this link between the north of Lienz and the city center is in recent months. Now the bridge is open again for all pedestrians and cyclists - and the city"s safety is even better ensured by the absence of pillars during floods, as there can no longer be blockages."
