Increasing demand for city bus services in Lienz: In 2024, the city buses recorded around 280,000 passengers - that"s 60 percent more than in 2019.
The increasing usage clearly indicates that mobility behavior in the Lienz area has shifted in favor of public transportation: More and more people in the city area consciously choose the bus over their own car.

Mobility State Councillor René Zumtobel sees the positive development in Lienz as exemplary for successful mobility policy in rural-urban areas: "When frequency and route guidance are improved in a targeted manner and adapted to regional needs, public transport creates real added value - for people and the climate. The bus thus becomes an attractive alternative to the car and often makes mobility possible for the first time: direct, reliable, and easily accessible for everyone.
Public transport is part of urban development
For Mayor Elisabeth Blanik, the expansion of public transport is a central component of urban development: "A modern Lienz needs modern mobility. This also means: less car traffic in the city center. The people in Lienz want to come to the city without searching for parking, without traffic jams. The buses make this possible.
Together with a planning office and the city, the VVT revised the city"s public transport in 2018. The existing circular line was replaced by a radial line. The advantage of the radial line is that fast connections from starting point to endpoint are possible. The current results of the passenger survey show that this concept is now well accepted and increasingly used.
Alexander Jug, Managing Director of Verkehrsverbund Tirol, emphasizes the importance of route guidance: "The switch to a radial line was an important step to make urban transport in Lienz more suitable for everyday use. For people, this means: shorter travel times, clear route guidance, and direct routes - an offer that is well received and significantly facilitates the switch to the bus.
Public transport has found a firm place in the daily lives of people in Lienz. With a clear network of lines, regular timetables, and good accessibility, the city bus now functions as a reliable backbone for mobility in the Lienz area.
