The Isel - Our habitat in the city

The Isel undergoes a sustainable transformation: flood protection, ecological enhancement, and new accesses create a high-quality habitat "Iselfluss" in the middle of the city. We appreciate the Isel as a glacier river with special seasonal dynamics and high ecological balance. As part of the flood protection project, the Isel in Lienz is to be deepened by up to 2.5 m to create more space for nature and recreation.

In addition, the dilapidated riverbank walls will be upgraded to the latest technology with a facing wall or backfilling. The structure of the Isel bridge will be adjusted so that the two central pillars are eliminated, reducing the risk of blockages in the city area. The removal of the cataract will create a continuous river, with a fish-passable ramp installed. Furthermore, the sediment measuring station upstream of the parish bridge will be restored.
