The Isel - Our Habitat in the City

The Isel undergoes a sustainable transformation: flood protection, ecological enhancement, and new access create a high-quality habitat "Iselfluss" in the middle of the city. We value the Isel as a glacier river with special seasonal dynamics and a high ecological balance. As part of the flood protection project, the Isel in Lienz is to be deepened by up to 2.5 m to create more space for nature and recreation.

In addition, the dilapidated retaining walls will be brought up to the latest technology standards through a facing wall or backfilling. The structure of the Isel bridge will be adjusted so that the two central pillars are eliminated, reducing the risk of blockage in the city area. The demolition of the cataract will create a continuous flow, with a fish-passable ramp installed. Furthermore, the sediment measuring point upstream of the parish bridge will be restored.
