Earthquakes as the cause of underground mass displacements cannot be prevented. Even if experts do not predict an immediate danger of major earthquake damage events for our immediate living environment, it is still important to deal with the correct behavior rules and precautionary measures for one"s own personal area. Earthquake-resistant, norm-compliant construction and knowledge of the correct behavior in the event of an earthquake are points that can reduce and mitigate damage in case of an emergency.
Carrying out appropriate protective measures and activities during and after a strong earthquake significantly improves the personal safety situation. The earthquake service at the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics ( ZAMG ) provides information on the current seismic activity: www.zamg.ac.at/earthquake. The Austrian Earthquake Service deals with earthquake monitoring (observatories) and the analysis of earthquakes.
Information, hazard elimination and assistance in case of emergency:
Austria has one of the densest civil protection systems in Europe with its many voluntary relief and rescue organizations. In Lienz, the volunteer fire brigade of the city of Lienz, the Red Cross, the mountain rescue service and the dog handler groups are equipped with technical equipment for searching, rescuing and providing for buried persons.
In addition, heavy clearing and transport equipment and vehicles are available in the fleet of the municipal economic yard. Hydraulic lifting and cutting tools, mobile rescue equipment, sanitary facilities, tents and emergency beds, as well as mobile kitchen facilities are kept ready for emergencies in the disaster camps of the rescue organizations. In joint exercises, the interaction of the emergency forces and the coordinated use of mountain and rescue equipment are practiced and continuously improved.
