Advent market of Lienz
Advent is especially festive in Lienz. In this time, rich in tradition, the main
square of Lienz transforms into one of Austria’s most beautiful Advent mar-
kets. Lanterns and open fires festively illuminate the artfully decorated huts.
The scent of gingerbread, Kiachln (a type of fried dough pastry), mulled
wine and hot tea fills the air. “Romantic ingredients” for the Advent market.
The Liebburg becomes a giant advent calendar and, on each day, opens
one of its windows showing works by local artists. Unique gift ideas, Christ-
mas tree decorations, traditional artisan crafts and culinary treats make the
Advent market a friendly and atmospheric meeting point for the whole fa-

In Lienz, the silent time is literally “rung in” by some rather loud fellows. The
Krampus run in the first days of December is a tradition and a spectacu-
lar highlight of Advent. Artistic handmade masks, thick furs and gigantic,
deafening bells spread an unforgettable, eerie mood. Behind secured cor-
dons, the Krampus parades are an impressive experience for the whole

Three Kings’ Market
The Dreikönigsmarkt (“Three Kings’ Market”) extends the festive atmosphe-
re in the Old Town from 26 December to 6 January on one of the most
beautiful public squares in Lienz. Booths with delicacies from the region
and beyond, artisan crafts and traditional products from East Tyrol, several
live concerts and activities for children make this market a popular meeting
point of the town over the holidays.
The highlight is the New Year’s Eve party on 31 December: Artistic video
animations engulf the buildings on Johannesplatz in a festive atmosphere.
The silent disco plays two different genres of music by DJs via headpho-
